Our Club

Carol and Barry started Iruka Judokwai in 1995 at Field Junior School when they moved from the Watford YMCA after the judo club there became too large for the venue.

Carol and Barry started the club in 1995 having been involved in other clubs for many years.

The Club is very much like an extended family for the pair whose life revolves around making judo fun and accessible for all.

Iruka Judokwai is a great place to try an exciting sport whilst making new friends.

For those wondering, Iruka translates to Dolphin in Japanese, hence their appearance on our Club badge.

Iruka Judokwai is a friendly club where the enjoyment of judo is one of the main aims for both its junior and senior members.

Members are regularly informed of gradings and competitions but are not obliged to participate, although they are encouraged if the event is of a suitable level to their capabilities. Iruka guides its members into achieving their goals as and when they are ready. Some members only wish to participate at club level whilst others attend competitions on a regular basis.

Many of the club members have started as novices and gone on to achieve their Dan grade (Black belt). Some members have achieved a high standard of judo and have been selected to join the national team both at junior and senior level.

Iruka’s junior sessions are for those aged between 7 and 16 years and there is a relatively equal balance between girls and boys. There is no upper age limit for newcomers to the senior mat but we always advise newcomers to work at their own level of fitness/capability.

Iruka prides itself on accepting all-comers to the sport to give them the opportunity to experience Judo.

All of our coaches have completed Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks (formally CRB), first aid and Judo re-validation assessment and the club also has a Welfare Officer, Tracey Pizzey.

If Judo is new to you and is something you would like to try, pop along to one of our training sessions. Simply wear track suit bottoms and tee shirt as we have spare jackets for newcomers and we're sure you'll have fun.

The Club is a great environment for girls, boys, young and old to mix and make new friends who share a common interest and Carol and Barry make it feel very much like one big extended family.

Throughout the year the club runs several social events and a presentation evening as well as supporting players at competitions, grading's and other events.  See Club Social event page for further details.
