What you need to know to do a Grading

Judo has a very visual process of demonstrating a Judoka's technical progression and ability through a coloured belt system, where grades are awarded through a very structured technical assessment regime. Players are required to demonstrate technical knowledge and understanding, along with the ability to understand relevant Japanese terminology associated with their grade. This gives a student the opportunity to follow a clear path from novice to advanced standards and to attain a Black belt.

Mon Grades

Kyu Grades

There are currently 18 Mon Grades from novice through to 18th Mon (Brown belt/3 red tags) and promotion through Mon grades is based on technical knowledge and understanding along with a demonstrable appreciation of some Japanese terminology.
There are six progressive Kyu grades which again are based on knowledge and understanding of techniques along with the ability to translate Japanese terminology.

Dan Grades

Dan grades are coveted as the distinction between Student and Advanced by achieving the necessary standard. The Black Belt is 1st Dan and this rises to 10th Dan.
